Description
Description
The Toyota 2ZR-FE 1.8-liter is an honest engine — durable, efficient, and utterly silent. Toyota buried its induction note under a thick plastic airbox and a tangle of resonator chambers designed to make a Corolla sound like an appliance. It succeeded. The engine starts, runs, and gets 35 MPG without ever making itself heard. If that's all you're looking for, stop reading.
But if you've ever wished your Corolla, Matrix, or iM had even a hint of character when you put your foot down, this intake changes everything. It replaces the factory silencer assembly with a black powder-coated aluminum intake tube, a high-flow dry cone filter, and a steel heat shield. The pipe is mandrel-bent for smooth airflow into the throttle body. The filter removes the restriction and the sound deadening in one swap.
Power gains are honest: 4-8 WHP from reduced intake restriction and smoother flow. The real upgrade is sensory — a crisp induction growl that builds from 3,000 RPM and makes the 1.8L feel awake for the first time. At cruise, it's as quiet as stock. Under throttle, the engine finally sounds like it's doing something. The kit fits 2009-2017 Corolla (E140 and E170), 2009-2013 Matrix, and 2016-2017 Scion iM / Corolla iM — all sharing the same 2ZR-FE architecture. No cutting, no permanent changes — just 45-75 minutes with basic hand tools.
Key Features
Black powder-coated aluminum intake tube — mandrel-bent for smooth, unrestricted airflow into the throttle body; corrosion-resistant finish designed to outlast the car
High-flow dry cone filter — no oil required, cleanable and reusable every 15,000-20,000 miles; larger surface area than the factory panel filter
Steel heat shield — separates the filter from direct engine-bay radiant heat while preserving access to the factory cold air intake duct
4-8 WHP gain — honest real-world range on an otherwise stock 1.8L 2ZR-FE engine; the factory intake's primary bottleneck is noise suppression, not airflow, so gains are modest but real
Sharper throttle response — reduced intake path restriction means the engine reacts faster when you tip into the pedal, especially noticeable in the 2,500-4,500 RPM daily-driving range
Audible induction note — the growl Toyota silenced with factory resonators becomes clearly audible under acceleration; calm at idle and highway cruise, spirited when you push past 3,000 RPM
Bolt-on install — 45-75 minutes with basic hand tools (10mm and 12mm sockets, flathead and Phillips screwdrivers); no cutting, drilling, or permanent modifications
